Background of my inspirational monument: Villa Serbelloni, previously also known as Castello di Bellagio, is a villa located in the municipality of Bellagio, in the area of the promontory. It is believed that the same promontory was the seat of the Tragedy villa of Pliny the Younger; instead it is certain that the area was home to the first residential pleasure villa built on the lake on the ruins of an ancient castle. In 1539 the Sfondrati took possession of the villa which was destroyed in a fire and rebuilt it according to its current features. The name of the villa derives instead from the Serbelloni family who inherited it in the person of Alessandro Serbelloni in 1788 from the last of the Sfondrati. Later, after a short period as a hotel, in 1929 the villa was purchased by billionaire Ella Walker who then bequeathed it to the Rockefeller Foundation, the current owner, who used it as a conference center.
